10 Terms that Should Be Banned From Art School Critiques | Print Out Poster*

Today’s post is for all the art students out there.

As an art student, I spent a lot of time in critiques, or what we called “crits”. My non art major friends couldn’t understand how I could be in class for six hours, three days a week and still have another studio class in the evenings. A lot of it was work time but toward the end of any assignment or quarter, we had to sharpen our arsenal of vocabulary and artist references to sound witty in front of our peers. At best we would ignite discussion. At worst people would sleep.

There were the crit virgins that would say, “I really like the shade of blue you used, it works really well in contrast with the background,” to which some professors would really nail them to the wall. You couldn’t just “like” something and slink away. You had to really challenge the creator and question why he or she made the decisions they did. Which brings us to the insufferable ones that absolutely relished in waving their art school card in the air. They frivolously used every art crit keyword possible and they made each minute feel like an eternity (insert eye rolls here). For all of you that are still suffering through this hardship, I’ve created a list of lingo that should never be uttered in crit ever again. It’d make a great gift for an art student or maybe it’d just be a fun drinking game (not during class, of course).

*Feel free to print but please be respectful of usage. Thanks!

Photo Narrative Winner: Forrest

Talented singer and model extraordinaire Forrest hung out with us Friday night. As one of the lucky winners of our Photo Narrative photo shoot giveaway, he brought a number of outfit changes, we switched up the backdrops and the results were pure magic. We love when people aren’t afraid to tell a story.

Thank you, Forrest, for being such a fantastic sitter, actor and personality. Now it’s your turn.

Mother of all Contests: Photo Narrative Giveaway

We’re doing something that we haven’t seen before and it’s huge.

From now until noon on March 6th, 2012, you can enter to win a professional photo shoot with the one and only Nick Azzaro (well, actually we know of at least two others…) but this is the only one we know of that shoots incredible photos. His style is dark, dramatic and full of surprises. This is not an ordinary, “say cheese” kind of shoot. Think storytelling, original and dangerous.

The Photo Narrative Giveaway* is easy to enter. Simply email us, go to our Facebook page (and like us) or Twitter page (and follow us) and answer the question, “Who’s your favorite photographer and why?” No matter how brilliant your answer, we’re still going to keep it fair and choose three winners by random on March 6th. We’ll let you know who won that evening and those lucky people win a one hour photo session shoot along with three digital images that they can do what ever they want ’em! Full details and rules can be found on our website. Good luck!

*Sorry folks, you must travel to Ann Arbor for the shoot.

This could be you.
